This is the fate of Saeed Malekpour, an Iranian-born, legal Canadian resident sentenced to death in Iran. Malekpour was arrested in 2008 after he returned to his native country to visit his ill father.
According to his wife, Fatima Eftekhari:
While working as a computer programer, Mr. Malekpour designed a program that would allow clients to upload photographs and data files and attached his name to the program before sending it out. Unbeknownst to her husband, the program appears to have been used as part of an adult content website.
Iran doesn’t care for free speech, and Malekpour’s site violates decency standards. Furthermore, Iran doesn’t recognize dual citizenship and even so, he’s only a legal resident, so the Canadian government, upholding a longstanding tradition of not defending its non-white residents in trouble abroad, won’t do much.
It is unclear when the sentence will be carried out.
